Dr. Pat comments: I have concerns, as do many parents I think, that my children may be harmed by being raised in a culture where a high level of extracurricular involvement seems essential to developing a strong social network. Our daughters have a wonderful time and have many good friends, but I am sometimes concerned about whether they are developing the same responsibility and respect for authority that I had at their age. At times I will share with them my memories (enhanced after 35 or 40 years) of how responsible and respectful of authority I was at their ages. Surprisingly, they don't seem to fully appreciate the value of my wisdom. This holiday season Dr. Margaret and I had an experience that allowed us to examine this issue more thoroughly....
