The last time I eliminated a voracious grasshopper from my tiny back yard vegetable garden, it did not occur to me there may be members of the insect Order Orthoptera (grasshoppers, katydids, crickets, cockroaches, mantids such as the "praying mantid" and walking sticks) in danger of becoming extinct and therefore in need of protection. As a matter of fact, there are numerous endangered and threatened insects in the United States on the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service list, but more about this later....
