The government has sold 743 gold coins seized at Savannah's port for $575,000, months after they were found in a tractor tire inside a cargo container from the Dominican Republic, authorities said.
The one-ounce coins - 361 U.S. Gold Eagles, 380 South African Krugerrands and two Australian Gold Nuggets - were forfeited under a Sept. 19 court order covering merchandise illegally introduced into the United States as proceeds exchanged for a controlled substance, U.S. Attorney Edmund A. Booth Jr. said Wednesday....
